Gambling constitutes an addictive behavior characterized from the loss of self-monitoring and the gradual economic, moral and sentimental collapse of the patient. In the framework of this dependence, the patient develops tolerance, that is to say he wants and plays more and more, often losing the significance of time and it presents frequent sentimental precessions (euphoria-malaise). The lie and sharpness constitute essential faults as much as virtues of a pathological gambler while without them he could not continue this exclusive relation with the lucky games.

The lucky games are distinguished in a) games of chance in which the player does not practice any type of control (roulette, fruit machines etc...) and b) in the games in which a degree of dexterity and knowledge is required from the player (sport bets, horse racing, poker etc...).

Characteristic symptom of the illness of pathological gambling is the maintenance of fables, erroneous admissions, delusions and hallucination of control round the conditions and the ritual of the game. Most patients consider that they are found near the discovery of an infallible, sure system that will allow them to win even if they are found to lose big amounts for big time intervals. They tend to overestimate their profits while they forget or underestimate the sums that have been lost and adopt a twisted picture of facts. Characteristic example is the conviction of a pathological player that considers that “he almost gained" betting for example, on number 13 when it came out in the roulette number 14.

Pathological gambling constitutes the most serious psychiatric illness with terrible results for the patient, partly because the patients usually deny to seek treatment but also because of the abandonment from their families caused by the stigmatization and the economic and moral exhaustion to which they are led to. The loneliness and social isolation are characteristic stages of the course of the illness of “pathological gambling”.

Therapeutic confrontation

The treatment of pathological gambling is recommended as it helps the patient to exceed the absurd thoughts that he has developed, with regard to the control of accidental facts concerning gambling as well as in the confrontation of various psychiatric and neurological symptoms that are usually presented because of the addictive process. The abrupt interruption of gambling often presents the simliar syndrome found when deprived of alcohol and substances (pains in the stomach, nauseas, vertigo, disturbances of diet and sleep, stress, malaise) and can also cause neurological disturbances (epilepsy) as well as various psychiatric diseases. Main objective of therapeutic process of the patient is his mobilisation to the direction of gradual interruption of gambling and the search of techniques for his long-lasting abstention from lucky games.
